Today, I fell head over heels for the world of darkness, and then even deeper into its embrace.
After struggling to amass more than 1,000 Dark and Darker gold since playtest 4, I finally succeeded in piecing together a formidable kit, setting off a series of events that culminated in me possessing not one but two incredibly powerful setups for my rogue.
I found myself engaged in a high-stakes duel with another rogue, both of us adopting a cat-and-mouse strategy in the second-to-last circle of the treacherous goblin caves. Armed with my trusty hand crossbow, we played a nerve-wracking game of invisibility cat-and-mouse, attempting to outmaneuver each other in the expansive chamber filled with coffins and presided over by the formidable goblin mage. As the battle progressed, it reached a point where both of us remained invisible, waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
This prolonged skirmish had been ongoing throughout the entire match, and while we were locked in this contest, a barbarian wreaked havoc upon the rest of the lobby. At the height of our confrontation, this bloodthirsty barbarian burst through the chamber’s door, positioning themselves right in front of the other rogue. In that crucial moment, the other rogue’s invisibility wore off, and they swiftly decided to launch an attack on the barbarian who stood before them.
I found myself facing a difficult choice: should I bide my time and ambush the eventual victor or let go of my rivalry with the pesky rogue and eliminate the barbarian? My heart prevailed, and I committed to ambushing the axe-wielding barbarian (a class of opponents I despised due to their ability to relentlessly hunt me down and deliver one-shot kills when I had good gear). The unsuspecting barbarian met their demise within seconds, likely due to two ambush weakpoint attacks that might as well have been instant death sentences.
As the other rogue retreated to tend to their wounds, courtesy of an Achilles-striking throwing axe, I seized the opportunity to rummage through the fallen enemy’s belongings. Swiftly pocketing the amulet and rings, I then distanced myself to avoid the possibility of a double-cross by the cunning rogue. Fortunately, they appeared content with preserving their own life, choosing to inspect the deceased barbarian’s remains and administer some medicinal aid before heading towards an exit portal. Overwhelmed with gratitude, they allowed me to claim the remainder of the loot uncontested. As the final circle tightened its grip, I summoned a portal and returned to the fallen barbarian’s body, greeted by a treasure trove of +2 and +3 enhancements across the board.
I swiftly emptied my inventory, deftly shifting items and gear with a skill akin to playing a frantic game of Tetris, narrowly escaping the countdown of the closing final circle. I emerged from this ordeal richer than I had ever been.
Two games later, I embarked on my routine patrol of the goblin caves, moving from one centipede to the next, and from one golden chest to another, when I heard the unmistakable sound of loot crashing to the ground. I turned a corner and discovered a rogue standing over the lifeless body of a basic cleric kit. My primal instincts took over, and my stiletto found its mark in the murderer’s skull. As I looted the assailant’s kit, I was once again greeted by an entire set of +3 enhancements tailored perfectly for my class.
And thus, this pauper transformed into a wealthier individual than ever before, at least until the fickle hand of fate decided to subject me to consecutive, inexplicable one-shot deaths.
